The kanji for pig (豚) can be pronounced either as "buta" or as "ton" in Japanese. Tonjiru (or Butajiru) is a kind of Miso Soup with pork and a lot of root vegetables such as Gobo (burdock root) and carrot. Even though it is a Miso soup, Tonjiru tastes very different from ordinary.   3. When Pork is cooked, add Miso and Tofu. Remove the soup from the heat just before it starts to boil.
  4. Sprinkle finely chopped spring onions, and serve. *Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Powder) is also recommended to add extra flavour.
