Instructions to make Pappu Charu (pressure cooker method):
- Wash and add toor dal to the pressure cooker.
- Add chopped tomatoes and green chillies.
- Later add turmeric, redchilli powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder.
- Add 2 - 2.5 cups of water and close the lid. Pressure cook for 5 - 6 whistles.
- Soak Tamarind in a cup of water.
- Open the cooker after the pressure releases. Add salt.
- Mash it well and add tamarind juice.
- Adjust salt and water, bring it to boil.
- Meanwhile prepare the tempering. Heat oil in pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
- When they start to splutter add finely sliced onions. Saute it for a min and add crushed garlic pods.
- Add dried red chillies and curry leaves. Saute it and switch off the flame.
- Add the tadka to the boiling dal and bring it to one final boil.
- Serve hot with rice.
