Tempeh manis is a somewhat sweet preparation of tempeh (fermented soybeans), and is one of my favorite dishes from a trip to Indonesia a year ago.

The ingredients needed to make Simple Tempeh Manis:
  1. Prepare 1 Tempeh
  2. Take 1 pinch ★High quality salt
  3. Get 3 tbsp ★Kecap manis
  4. Get 1 clove ★Garlic (grated)
  5. Take 1 Soy bean oil (or your choice of oil)

Heat the oil in a heat-proof pan. If you think the oil is hot enough to deep-fry, you can put a piece of tempeh in the oil. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Remove the tempeh, and set it aside.

Steps to make Simple Tempeh Manis:
  1. Finely chop the tempeh.
  2. Fry the tempeh in a frying pan (in 2-3 batches).
  3. Leave 1 tablespoon oil in the pan and add all of the tempeh back into the pan. Then add the ★ ingredients and mix everything together.
  4. It's ready! You can add some citrus juice over the top for extra zest. Have fun with the flavours.
  5. This is kecap manis, a sweet ketchup made with black soy beans.

Add fried tempeh and kecap manis sauce, mix well and heat through. Many Indonesian tempeh dishes start by deep-frying tempeh slices until golden brown and crispy, then further dress with a choice of sauce or dressing.
