Lemon Gyudon I found a simple recipe from YouTube (ochikeron) and modified it to our liking. It feels light and fresh because of the lemon. In this recipe, I will show you how to make it without soy sauce: tasty yet delicious salt flavor with hint of refreshing lemon!!!

The ingredients needed to make Lemon Gyudon:
  1. Prepare 500 grams thinly sliced beef (I used sirloin)
  2. Take 2 tsp grated garlic
  3. Get 1 tsp grated ginger
  4. Prepare 1 tsp salt
  5. Take 1 onion, sliced thinly
  6. Take Juice from 1/2 lemon
  7. Get 1 tbsp honey
  8. Take 2 tsp + 1 tsp sesame oil
  9. Make ready Chopped scallion for topping (optional)
  10. Prepare Sliced lemon (optional)
  11. Take Furikake (optional)

People in Japan usually want gyudon for a quick lunch or dinner whereas western people go to McDonald's or KFC. You can find those Gyudon fast food chain restaurants everywhere in Japan. To make the gyudon: Heat a small frying pan over medium-high heat and add half of the dashi flavouring to the pan, along with half of the onions. Yoshinoya is where I first tasted Gyudon and it is where I went for recipe inspiration.

Instructions to make Lemon Gyudon:
  1. Mix beef with garlic, ginger, and salt. Set aside for 5 minutes or so.
  2. Heat the pan (I used medium heat) and pour 2 tsp sesame oil in it. Stir-fry onion until translucent. Then add the beef. Flip and mix occasionally until they turn brown. It will probably take about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat. Add honey and mix.
  4. Add lemon juice and sesame oil. Mix until well combined. If you think it still needs more salt, add a pinch or two.
  5. Put some on top of rice. Add furikake, scallion, and lemon slice. Enjoy!

Yoshinoya states that their beef bowl is "Thin juicy slices of USDA approved beef simmered with fresh onions in a special sauce of herbs and spices over a bed of plump steamed. I was forced to make a few changes. One, the photo showed some snow peas added in. With the corona virus social distancing, I was running low on fresh vegs, so very thin sliced carrots and some slices of green onion went in–the carrots with the onions at the beginning, and the green onion at the end–oh, yeah; also a little fresh spinach at the end. Bring water to a boil and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and reduce the heat to low.
