The ingredients needed to make Batata Vada:
- Take For Filling :
- Make ready 3-4 boiled potatoes mashed
- Get 1 tbsp oil
- Make ready 1 tsp cumin seeds
- Prepare 1 tsp whole coriander seeds
- Prepare 1 tsp garam masala
- Get 1 tsp red chilli powder
- Take 1 tsp ginger and garlic paste
- Get 1 green chilli finely chopped
- Take 1 tsp dry mango powder
- Prepare 1 pinch Asafoetida (hing)
- Take to taste Salt
- Prepare Handful coriander leaves
- Prepare For Batter:
- Prepare 1 cup gram flour (besan)
- Take 1/2 tbsp Salt
- Get 1 pinch baking soda
- Prepare 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- Take 1/2 glass water
- Take For Frying:
- Prepare 1 cup Oil to fry
Serve hot with tea and green chutney / tomato ketch up. Serving Ideas: Serve Batata Vada as a snack or side dish with green chilli and coriander chutney. Batata vada recipe - one of my favorite and one of the popular Mumbai street food. This can be eaten as a snack with chutney or used in making vada pav.
Steps to make Batata Vada:
- In a pan heat 1 tbsp oil on a low flame, add cumin seeds, coriander seeds, Asafoetida and ginger garlic paste. Mix and cook until the raw smell from ginger garlic goes away. (Takes 1 min).
- Next add red chilli powder, garam masala and dry mango powder. Mix well and add mashed potatoes along with salt and coriander leaves. Give a good mix.Turn the flame off.
- Once the above mixture cools down to the room temperature, Make small balls and pat them flat on your palm. Keep it aside.(it makes approx 6 wadas out of 3-4 potatoes).
- In another bowl take gram flour, add salt to taste, turmeric powder and baking soda. Mix everything and add water to make little thick flowing consistency. Keep it aside.
- Heat oil in a pan for frying on a medium flame. Once the oil is hot. Take one vada at a time (made in step 3) dip in the batter (made in step 4).
- Slowly leave the dipped vada in the hot oil. Fry them from both sides till light golden brown by flipping them in between.
- Remove it on a tissue paper or paper towel.
- Follow the process for the remaining wadas.
- Serve hot with or without Pav/Bread along with chutney and fried green chilli.
