  1. Take 100 g toor Dal
  2. Prepare 1 cup chopped spinach leaves
  3. Make ready 1 onion chopped
  4. Prepare 1 tomato chopped
  5. Take 2-3 dry red chillies
  6. Prepare 1 tsp crushed ginger
  7. Get 5-6 garlic cloves chopped
  8. Make ready 2 tbsp mustard oil
  9. Prepare 1 tsp cumin seeds
  10. Make ready 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  11. Take 1/4 tsp turmeic powder
  12. Get 1 pinch red chilli powder
  13. Take 1 pinch hing (asafoetida)
  14. Prepare To taste salt
Steps to make Palak Dal Tadka:
  1. To start with rinse the dal well and put it in a pressure cooker with some water, turmeric powder and salt. Pressure cook it for about 2-3 whistles on medium heat.
  2. Release the pressure and open the lid. Add in chopped palak (spinach) and cook for about 5 minutes. Remove from the flame.
  3. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When they sizzle add dry chilli and onion. Saute till onion turns brown. Next add chopped tomato and cook till it turns soft.
  4. Now add cooked dal, mix well, cover and cook for a minute or two. Turn off the flame.
  5. In another small pan (preferably tadka pan) heat remaining oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter add chopped garlic and crushed ginger. Saute till garlic turns golden brown. Next add dried red chilli and fry for few seconds. Then add a pinch of hing and finally add a little bit of red chilli powder to give colour to the tempering. Turn off the flame.
  6. Add this tempering (tadka) to cooked dal. Thus palak dal tadka is ready.
  7. Serve Palak Dal Tadka with rice or chapati.
