The ingredients needed to make Tadka Daal:
  1. Get 1 Cup Yellow Moong Daal
  2. Take 1 Cup Pink Masoor Daal
  3. Make ready 1 Medium Onion (Finely chopped)
  4. Get 2 Medium Tomatoes (Finely Chopped)
  5. Prepare 2 Green Chilies (Chopped)
  6. Get 6-8 Large Garlic Cloves (Finely Chopped)

  8. Make ready 2 Tsp Degi Mirch/Red Chili Powder
  9. Get 2 Tsp Garam Masala Powder
  10. Take 2 Tsp Turmeric Powder

  12. Make ready 2 Tsp Cumin Seeds
  13. Take 1/2 Tsp Asafoetida/Heeng
  14. Take 1 handful Coriander leaves (Finely chopped)
  15. Get 2 Tbsp Clarified butter/Desi ghee
Instructions to make Tadka Daal:
  1. Wash the Daals until the water runs clear. - Soak for about 30 minutes.
  2. Drain the water. - Place the Daals in a medium pot with 4 Cups of Water along with the Tomatoes, Turmeric & Salt.
  3. Begin cooking over high heat. When it comes to a boil, stir well & reduce heat to low. Cover with a lid.
  4. Cook for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally. - Switch between low & medium heat.
  5. Prepare the Tadka/Tempering in the meantime.
  6. Heat the Desi Ghee in a small Frying Pan or a Tadka Pan. (Heat should be low).
  7. Tip in the Cumin Seeds. Let them crackle. - Add the Asafoetida followed by the chopped Onions, Ginger & Garlic.
  8. Sauté over low to medium heat until golden.
  9. Sprinkle the Degi Mirch Powder & Garam Masala on the Daal.
  10. Pour the hot Tadka on top of the cooked Daal. Stir well.
  11. Let it simmer covered over low heat for 5 minutes. - Check seasoning. Add more water if required. We want a medium consistency.
  12. Garnish with the Cilantro & Green Chilies.
  13. Serve hot with Roti/Parantha/Rice.
