The ingredients needed to make Amla (Gooseberry) Chutney:
- Get 6-7 amla (gooseberry), boiled
- Take 3 tbsp. oil
- Take 2 dry red chilies
- Make ready 10-12 peppercorns
- Make ready 1 tsp. cumin seeds
- Prepare 2 tbsp. coriander seeds
- Prepare 1/2 tsp. fenugreek seeds
- Take 2 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
- Get 1 onion, chopped
- Take 1 " ginger, chopped
- Get 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
- Prepare handful coriander leaves along with the roots
- Make ready 1-2 green chilies (opt)
- Make ready 2 tbsp. roasted peanuts
- Take to taste salt
- Prepare 1 sprig curry leaves
- Make ready 1 tsp. mustard seeds
- Take 1/4 tsp. asafoetida
- Make ready 1 tsp. urad dal
- Make ready as needed curry leaves, chopped amla & fresh chilies to garnish (opt)
It is also known as usirikaya thokku pachadi. This recipe is from my mum who makes it often during karthika masam. Amla or Indian Gooseberry has found favour in Indian houses for generations. The Indian Gooseberry, or Amla, is a tangy seasonal fruit available during the winter months.
Instructions to make Amla (Gooseberry) Chutney:
- Heat 1 tbsp. oil in a pan and saute the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, pepper, red chilies, fenugreek for a few seconds on low flame till you get a nice aroma.

- Grind into a powder. Keep aside.
- Heat oil and saute the onion, ginger and garlic till light brown. Switch off the flame. add the coriander leaves, green chilies and peanuts.
- Grind into a paste and keep aside.
- Boil the amla (gooseberries) or pressure cook for 1-2 whistles….. And grind into a paste.
- In a bowl, mix together amla and onion paste along with the powdered spice.
- Heat oil in a pan and temper with the mustard seeds. Add the curry leaves, asafoetida and urad dal. Saute for a few seconds.
- Add the prepared paste and saute on low flame till the moisture dries up.
- Serve, garnished with curry leaves, chilies and chopped amla.
