Nanaimo Bars are one of Canada's favorite confections. The story goes that a Nanaimo housewife entered a recipe for a chocolate square in a magazine contest. She called her recipe 'Nanaimo Bars'. Yes, I dared to toy with a Canadian classic!

Steps to make Nanaimo Bars:
  1. 1st Layer: Heat the first 3 ingredients over a bain-marie (butter, sugar, cocoa powder). Add the beaten egg and patiently heat on low heat until thick. Once it thickens, remove from the heat. Add the crushed graham crackers, finely chopped oven-roasted walnuts, and coconut. Mix together and press into the container.
  2. 2nd Layer: Warm the 2nd butter listed in the ingredients (1/2 cup) to room temperature. Combine this melted 1/2 of butter with the heavy cream, custard powder, and powdered sugar. Mix until fluffy and then place on top of Step 1.
  3. Melt the chocolate. Add in 2 tablespoons of butter (the 3rd amount of butter listed) and mix together over low heat. Stop the heat and let it cool slightly. While it's still liquid, pour on top of Step 2. Place in the refrigerator until completely chilled.
